Devyani Sharma and Kathleen McCarthy are awarded a three-year ESRC grant

Published:

We are pleased to announce that Devyani Sharma (PI) and Kathleen McCarthy have been awarded a three-year grant by the ESRC for the project Generations of London English: Language and Social Change in Real Time (with Paul Kerswill and Sam Hellmuth, University of York). The project will track how London speech is changing in real time, in the context of substantial social change in recent decades. It will examine how phonetic and grammatical usage is changing across social class and ethnicity, how children select among these forms to develop their first speech repertoires, how this changes in adulthood, and implications of perception of these forms for equality. The project will also create the first comprehensive London English Corpus.
