Developing new treatments for rare diseases

Developing treatments for rare diseases can be slow and expensive, leaving many conditions with limited treatment options. 

Working with DEBRA, Queen Mary researchers have developed a new approach to rare-disease drug development that combines academic expertise, charity funding and patient-centred priorities. 

The partnership has now reported its first research results, helping accelerate the search for treatments for people living with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a rare life-limiting condition that causes extremely fragile skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch.

AI in emergency healthcare

Emergency departments need to make fast, complex decisions while operating under increasing pressure.
Queen Mary is leading an £1.8 million programme bringing together researchers, clinicians and healthcare partners to explore how artificial intelligence can support emergency care.
The programme will help improve the use of healthcare data and AI in emergency settings, supporting better-informed clinical decision making.
