qLegal hosted its Summer Party

On the 16 June 2022, qLegal hosted its Summer Party at the Trampery Old Street.

qLegal summer party attendees in a group photoThe party attracted a great turnout, over 140 people attended, including many qLegal alumni who enjoyed catching up with qLegal staff and students, as well as with each other. Attendees also included current supervisors, partners, advisory board members and speakers.  

The venue, The Trampery Old Street, is a purpose-led enterprise dedicated to making business a positive force in society. They provide workspaces, venues, training and management services in pursuit of their mission. 

Our alumni hail from around the world: India, Brazil, Greece, France, Nigeria, Kenya, Italy, Egypt, Denmark, Cyprus, Philippines, Peru and more. Since leaving Queen Mary and qLegal, they have embraced various career paths, ranging from In-House Counsel in tech company, Data Analyst for a major online tech company, Data Privacy and Protection Analyst, Associate or International Arbitration Intern in a large British law firm. After graduating from Queen Mary, one of our qLegal alumna even joined the start-up she was an extern in as part of her qLegal programme, as an IP lawyer.  

Karen Watton giving a speech at the qLegal summer party 2022Karen Watton, qLegal Director, first took the stage to kick off the evening. Three speakers followed:  

  • David Shanks, Senior Corporate Counsel at Google, qLegal Advisory Board member and longtime supporter of qLegal, who drew on his experience to discuss the future of the legal profession 
  • Dr Milla Marinova, Co-Founder & CEO of R8ER Ltd, discussed the difficulties faced by start-ups, and how qLegal’s services helped R8ER Ltd through the initial stages of its start-up journey 
  • Alicja Pawlowska, qLegal Alumna and IP Specialist at BenevolentAI: discussing how Alicja’s experience at qLegal directly inspired her to pursue a career working within a start-up. 

Attendees enjoyed reading informative banners about qLegal work and impact, provided their feedback and suggestions on the graffiti wall, as well as other fun activities. The party wrapped up with a team-based pub quiz which saw dozens of participants competed.
