The Global Interest in Regulating AI
In the latest episode of Yours Lawfully, students were joined by Helena Siebenrock, a trainee solicitor in the Tech, Media and Intellectual Property team at CMS UK.

Together, they discussed approaches to regulating AI and recent developments within the European Union, including the EU AI Act - a timely discussion given this month’s Paris AI Action Summit.
The main themes of the episode closely mirrored those of the AI Action Summit, where government leaders and experts gathered to address key questions on how the progress of AI is driven across all countries in a fair, safe, and humanist way.
Early in the episode, Helena made the key point that "[...] technology itself isn’t inherently bad, technology is neutral, but it’s about how we use it and that’s where the real danger lies”.
The follow-up discussion saw conversations on deep fakes, the data used to train AI, the economic impact, and asked who exactly should be held accountable for AI produced content? The episode finished with an in-depth explanation of the EU AI Act, which Helena finished by explaining that a similar approach may be coming to the UK soon:
“The tone does seem to be changing. In the king’s speech it was noted that the Starmer lead government, and this is quoted, will seek to establish appropriate legislation to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful AI models. It seems to be changing. It is worth keeping an eye on these developments.”
