Karen Watton is Senior Lecturer in Clinical Legal Education and the Director of Queen Mary University of London's award-winning commercial law clinic, qLegal. Having qualified as a barrister, Karen practised law in the UK and internationally for 15 years, in private practice and in-house. She also taught Legal & Business English to international lawyers.

With a longstanding interest in the future of work and of legal practice in particular, Karen moved into senior roles within a careers consultancy and with LexisNexis before joining Queen Mary.

With the rest of the qLegal team, Karen designs and delivers a range of experiential learning programmes for students that serve as a bridge between academic study and professional practice. There is an emphasis on innovation and making the experience of legal practice better for lawyers, clients and the public at large, following Karen’s academic interests of Creativity and Legal Design.

Karen is a member of the Learning & Development Steering Group of The Law Society, focusing on careers.

Karen also has a degree in Fine Art and a postgraduate diploma in Career Coaching.
