LGBTQA+ in Nature

Monday, 21 February 2022, 12:30-13:45

Throughout the history of the LGBTQA+ community, a common attack has been that "it's not natural" to be lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, asexual or other.  This informal lunchtime seminar will debunk the myth of "unnatural" sexuality by looking at a wide range of examples of LGBTQA+ taken from the natural world (featuring examples you probably have heard of and a whole load of examples that you probably haven't yet - from bison to bonobos, from giraffes to gynandromorphs).  Tony Michael (Faculty of Science & Engineering, School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences) has designed an accessible, thought-provoking seminar which requires no prior knowledge of biology.  (The seminar should take around 50 mins, but Tony is happy to stay online to take questions on examples of LGBTQA+ in the natural world.)

Throughout February

The Alumni Engagement Team

Our Alumni Engagement Team will be celebrating LGBT+ History Month via a series of dedicated interviews on our Alumni and Friends Blog and via video and written testimonials and takeovers across our social media channels. Keep an eye on our social media throughout February!

  • The Alumni Engagement Team’s first LGBTQA+ History Month profiles featuring Associate Producer within one of Microsoft's Xbox Gaming Studios, Playground Games, Vijay Gill (Computer Science with Industrial Experience BSc, 2019). Vijay shares his joy at belonging to and actively helping change perceptions of this community, highlights the amazing contributions of LGBTQA+ individuals throughout history and in present times, and why more opportunities need to be created for LGBTQA+ individuals in the workplace. For the full interview, visit: https://bit.ly/VijayGill
  • The Alumni Engagement Team’s second LGBTQIA+ History Month profile features Product Manager at ev.energy, Wilson Young (Theoretical Physics BSc, 2016). Wilson reflects on his joy at being President of the LGBT+ society during his student days and draws attention to the nuances within the LGBTQIA+ community and the need to ensure all activism on behalf of this community is intersectional. Students’ Union

The Students' Union’s LGBT+ History Month campaign takes place during national LGBT+ History Month in February and is led by LGBT+ Reps and LGBT+ Societies for Mile End and Barts and The London.

This year, reps and student groups have come together to bring a range of activities, content and events focusing on the experiences of the LGBT+ community, celebrating the diversity within it and raising awareness of issues facing LGBT+ people at Queen Mary and worldwide!

Check out their upcoming events.
