There are two distinct phases of Clearing:

Early Clearing runs from 5 July to 30 July

Main Clearing runs from 16 August (A levels results day)

Places at Queen Mary are limited and Clearing offers are given on a first come first served basis to qualified applicants. Most of our courses are likely to be filled before September, so if you are interested in studying at Queen Mary, please get in touch as soon as you receive your results.

1.   Entering Clearing

During the Clearing period, available courses are displayed on UCAS and our website.

2.   Finding the right course

You’ll be spending at least three years studying for your degree, so it’s important to find a course that’s right for you. Take a look at our Course Finder to learn more about the programmes we offer and to find more detailed information about course content, structure and modules available.

If you are applying to an institution outside of your original UCAS choices, make sure to do some research about the university itself too. Take a look around our website to learn about life at QMUL and our home in London.

You can also chat to our current students online.

3.   Applying for a course

Once you have made a shortlist of courses you are interested in, you will need to start calling universities. Please be aware that we will only consider applicants who have spoken to a member of our Admissions team. During the Clearing period, our Clearing hotline number will be published on our website.

Remember to have the following information to hand when you call:

  • your UCAS personal ID number (if you have one)
  • details of your qualifications, including the qualification type, the subjects studied and the grades achieved
  • the name of the course you are interested in
  • your UCAS history (ie if you have applied to university before or if you have received offers from other universities)
  • your fee status (ie whether you are a home, EU or overseas student)
  • your contact telephone number and email address

4.   Confirming your place

Once you have received a verbal offer from a university, and you have decided to accept, you will need to make this course your Clearing choice on UCAS Track.

After receiving a verbal offer from QMUL, you will receive an email confirming the offer in writing. This email will typically contain a deadline for making Queen Mary your Clearing choice on UCAS Track. If you miss this deadline, any provisional offer of study you may have received will expire and your place may be offered to another applicant.

To make Queen Mary your Clearing choice, go to the ‘Your choices’ section of UCAS Track and click 'Add Clearing choice’, then enter the details of the course. The Provisional Clearing Acceptance email confirming your offer will contain the course code. Our UCAS Institutional code is Q50.

Once you have updated your Clearing choice, our Admissions team will need to verify the information you provided at the point of verbal offer. This will usually take 1-2 working days, so please be patient.

Once we have verified your details, we will confirm your place. Your offer will show as accepted on Track and you will receive a confirmation email.

You should only add a course to Track if you are willing to accept the offer.

Adjustment is available from 16 August until 31 August.  It’s important to note that you will only have a 5 day period during this time to find a place through Adjustment. You will be able to see your personal 5 day Adjustment period in UCAS Track.

If you meet and exceed the requirements of your firm offer, you can enter Adjustment. This allows you to look for another course whilst retaining your current place.

1.   Registering for Adjustment

Once your original conditional offer becomes an unconditional offer, you will see the option to register for Adjustment in UCAS Track. You will then have five days (including weekends) to secure a new place.

2.   Researching courses

Not all universities have a vacancy list for Adjustment. Check course details by using the UCAS search tool and universities’ individual websites.

Queen Mary courses with places available through Adjustment will be published on our website, alongside our Clearing vacancies. For specific course information, including course content, structure and modules available, take a look at our Course Finder.

You will need to call the universities that you are interested in and find out if there are any places available

3.   Contacting the university

Once you’ve identified a course you’re interested in, you’ll need to call our Clearing Hotline, which will be published on our website in August. You’ll need to make it clear that you’re enquiring about joining us through Adjustment. Make sure you’ve got the following information to hand:

  • your UCAS Personal ID number
  • the name of the course you are interested in.

4.   Accepting your offer

Once you’ve spoken with a member of our Clearing Hotline, you’ll be transferred to a member of academic staff within the relevant academic School. They’ll confirm whether or not we can offer you a place on your chosen course.

If we can offer you a place, and you confirm over the phone that you wish to accept an offer through Adjustment, we will process your offer and you will lose your original firm choice. Your UCAS Track will be updated and you will see your new choice on the screen. You will also receive a confirmation email.

It’s important to consider the consequences of making a change through Adjustment, for example, you may not be eligible for guaranteed accommodation when switching to a different university, so think carefully about your decision.
