Project Description

 

The ATLAS experiment at CERN, Switzerland, is taking data at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and producing new insights into our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature exploiting cutting edge technology. With this unprecedented wealth of data, we can test our current understanding of the Standard Model of Particle Physics with the highest sensitivities and accessing unexplored energy ranges in our quest for new particles. One of the most powerful ways to push the energy boundary of our exploration is by studying the properties and the behaviours of the heavy quarks and the particles they compose. Measurements of very rare phenomena and tests of fundamental symmetries in the particle forces are crucial to put us on the path of solving the current open questions (matter-anti matter asymmetry, nature of dark matter, etc) to glimpse at what lies beyond the Standard Model.

 

The QMUL group has a complete programme of new physics searches via heavy quarks analyses in ATLAS and Belle II experiments and in phenomenological studies.

You will be supervised by two world leading scientists in the field and will have the opportunity to develop advanced analyses on unexplored data, using the latest tools like machine learning models.

This will give you experience in original and independent thinking in a unique environment, publications in prestigious journals and participation in the ATLAS collaboration at CERN.

Requirements

  • This project is only available to Chinese nationals eligible for China Scholarship Council Funding.

 

  • The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good Honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) and MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent).

 

  • You will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in all sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking) at the time of application to the CSC.
