Opportunities

We are always hoping to welcome new members of the Centre for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics.

Two standard opportunities are PhD studentships and appointments to specific staff vacancies. Details are available from the links on the left.

Other opportunities can be created. For example, we will support applications for fellowships from research councils or other sponsors of research (such as the Leverhulme Trust). The European Union has various schemes (such as the Marie Curie) to support fellowships and studentships for people of EU nationality. We encourage you to contact us if you would like to apply for funding from these routes.

We also are happy to encourage short-term visits.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships (2020 Call)
Calls for Expressions of Interest

European Fellowships

The Centre for Condensed Mater and Material Physics, part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), welcomes Expressions of Interest for researchers to apply jointly with a QMUL host supervisor, to the European Commission’s 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual European Fellowship Scheme.

The Fellowships are a prestigious EU funding scheme which support mobility, career development and training in Europe and beyond. The fellowships offer 12-24 months highly competitive researcher salary and research/training funds. The fellowship should include an individual research project, integrated with advanced training, professional development and knowledge transfer, hosted at QMUL.

What does the Fellowship entail?

A researcher with either a PhD or 4 years relevant research experience, moves to an institution in another country (the “host country”), where she/he works with a designated supervisor to deliver a specific research and training project. Both Supervisor and Fellow should collaborate on the application.

Researcher Profile

Candidates are expected to have a strong CV relative to their career stage and should be able to demonstrate their high potential.

Eligibility

  • You can be of any nationality, but you must not have spent more than 12 months in the UK in the last 36 months prior to the EC call deadline (09/09/2020)
  • You must have a PhD (or equivalent), or four years full time research experience
  • Gross salary (€89,067 pa*, including Living Allowance and Mobility Allowance)
  • Family allowance (if eligible, €500 per month also paid as salary to the fellow)
  • Research, training and networking costs (€800 per month)
  • Management and indirect costs (€650 per month to the host)

Funding

*Note that gross salary includes employer on-costs and tax

All allowances are flat rates and calculated according to the duration of the fellowship.

Research Areas

The Centre for Condensed Mater and Material Physics  welcomes Expressions of Interest (EOI) within the following research areas:

  • Nanoelectronic devices for quantum and biosensing application (uk)
  • 2D and 3D materials, high pressure and deformation
  • structure and dynamics of non-periodic systems, nanoparticles, glasses, etc.
  • theory and modelling of liquid and supercritical states of matter
  • theory of Intermolecular Interactions and force-field development
  • Structure and/or dynamics of coordination framework materials
  • Organic photonic materials

How to Apply

Your EOI must be submitted to Mrs Kati Schwab (k.schwab@qmul.ac.uk) by deadline of 15 June 2020.

Your EOI must include:

1)           A copy of your CV, including a full list of publications (max. 5 pages)

2)           2-page outline of your research proposal (to review quality of your idea)

3)           A statement confirming that you meet the fellow eligibility criteria (described above)

EOI Results will be announced on 29 June 2020. Selected candidates will then be invited to prepare their full proposal with their supervisor.

If you are invited to submit a proposal with QMUL, please read the Individual Fellowship Guide for Applicants and call text. Expert assistance with regards to proposal development and submission will also be provided by the QMUL Joint Research Management Office, EU Unit.

QMUL has a history of success with 66 Horizon 2020 individual fellowships awarded to date and ranked 8th in the UK and 14th in Europe for H2020 fellowships.

EC Funding Deadline

The call opened on 8 April 2020, the final deadline date for submissions to the European Commission is 9 September 2020 17:00 Brussels time.
