Near infrared emitting lanthanide doped materials have widespread applications in the realm of telecommunications where optical lasers and amplifiers play a vital role. Pr3+ ions have sharp emission at around 1.0μm, 1.3μm and 1.49μm in NIR range. Some literatures have reported the fabrication of 1.3μm lasers with Pr3+ ions materials in glass, but they have little coupling efficiency into waveguide for photonic integrated circuits. The organic-Pr system can be deposited as thin films onto any substrate that allows light to couple into waveguides. The sensitization of Pr3+ ions make an efficient four-level laser possible.
