From Mechanically Responsive Crystals to Light-Harvesting Polymers: Computational Design and Experimental Realization of Functional Materials
23 June 2025
Time: 11:00am
Speaker: Prof. Sharmarke Mohamed, Khalifa University
Venue: GO Jones Room 610
Prof. Sharmarke Mohamed is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Khalifa University, Head of the Chemical Crystallography Laboratory and Theme Leader at the Center for Catalysis and Separations (CeCaS). Research in the Mohamed group is interdisciplinary, spanning experimental crystal engineering, surface catalysis, mechanochemistry, computational modelling and more recently, the dynamics and properties of mechanically responsive molecular crystals. Sharmarke is a native of north London and having spent most of his formative years growing up in Tottenham, is unfortunately a suffering Spurs fan. Sharmarke, completed both his MSci and PhD Degrees under the supervision of Prof. Sally Price FRS and Prof. Derek Tocher at UCL, where he developed interest in chemical crystallography and computational methods of crystal structure prediction. His interdisciplinary approach to research continues to influence the work he is doing now at Khalifa University. Sharmarke is the founding Vice President of the Emirates Crystallographic Society (ECS) and immediate Past Chair of the American Chemical Society UAE International Chemical Sciences Chapter. Sharmarke is currently serving on the Editorial Board of the Royal Society of Chemistry journal, CrystEngComm.
