What’s new since the programme has been reviewed?

The new elective policy now allows Barts Health Trust to be more involved in which applicants we accept and to ensure the highest standard of elective provision is maintained on the elective programme. It also allows for the Trust to be remunerated for the time they dedicate to providing a great experience for our elective students.

I am no longer attending my elective, can I get a refund?

The £300 administration fee is not refundable, however, you may be able to receive a refund for the placement fee. If we are unable to place you, or your application is unsuccessful, you will automatically be issued a refund, but other circumstances are considered on a case by case basis. Please see our refund policy for further details.

Can I apply for more than 1 elective placement?

Unfortunately not. Elective applications are restricted to 1 elective placement per applicant.

Who do I contact if I have a problem?

If you have any further queries, or are experiencing any problems with the elective process, please do not hesitate to contact us on where we will respond to you at our earliest convenience.

How do I apply for an elective placement?

The Visiting Student Elective programme is open 3 times a year, in which time you are welcome to complete the online application form and pay for your elective. There is then a few weeks before the submission deadline to allow you time to complete your application form and send all the information to us. When you will need to complete your application form will depend on when you would like to attend your elective placement.

If my placement is for less than 4 weeks will the fee be reduced?

No, the standard fee of £850 total (£300 administration, £550 placement fee) is the same for all electives between 2-4 weeks.

Will the nature of the elective placement change under the new policy?

All of our elective placements offer observation placements with one of the consultants working for Barts Health Trust. The new policy will allow for the Trust to be involved in selecting the applicants they accept into their departments, but will not change the fundamental nature of our elective placements.
