His essay analyses the extent that the criteria for patentability under the European Patent Convention (EPC) and the United States Patent Code (Title 35 USC) achieve an appropriate balance between the twin policy objectives of rewarding inventorship and ensuring that only genuinely new, inventive, and useful products or processes are protected by patents. Professor Duncan Matthews, convenor of the LLM European and US Law of Patents module, presented the White & Black essay prize to Cody in person during a recent visit to Los Angeles, California.
