Learn the core mathematical principles of data analysis and how to apply them to real-world scenarios
In our data-driven economy, companies are seeking data experts who can use statistical techniques and the latest technologies to extract clear insights that inform every aspect of their strategy and operations. Our MSc Data Analytics programme teaches you the core mathematical principles of data analysis and how to apply these to real-world scenarios. Students gain a solid understanding of the underlying theoretical concepts, such as probability theory and statistics, learn how to manipulate data using tools such as R and Excel, and gain hands-on experience of using machine-learning algorithms to extract value from large data sets. We’ll also teach you how to program in Python, the industry-standard computer language for data analysis.
The programme consists of eight taught modules, a project and dissertation. In the first semester you will learn the core fundamentals of data analytics, machine learning and the statistics of data analysis, together with some of the relevant technology. You will then choose from options that explore financial, business and scientific applications, such as in trading and risk systems, optimisation of business processes, and relationships across complex systems. You may choose to focus your studies on one of three areas: the statistical foundations, financial or scientific applications of data science. Over the summer you will work on a research project which will allow you to develop strong applied data science research skills.
