Research with impact

Discover the widespread impact our research has had, from improving the gender balance in UK company boards to supporting fisheries in East Africa and the Pacific Islands.

Abstract creative world map interface on a modern conference room backgroundEver since it was founded, the School of Business and Management has been committed to producing research that has a positive social and economic impact. This follows on from our mission to promote social justice, sustainability and good governance in the management of organisations, which informs all of our teaching and research activity.

Our academics regularly engage with decision-makers in the public, private and non-profit sectors, in the UK and overseas. In the last few years, their research has impacted decisions that have made a positive difference to lives around the world – for example, by improving the gender balance in UK company boards; supporting fisheries in East Africa and the Pacific Islands; promoting the role of labour standards in international trade agreements; and increasing the resilience of Greece and Portugal’s labour markets.

Academics from all areas of the School are members of the Centre of Research in Equality and Diversity. This prominent international group is at the forefront of equality and diversity research, and has addressed issues including gender and sexuality in male-dominated professions and the implementation of the Equality Act 2010.

The School is also home to the Centre for Globalisation Research, which conducts research around the themes of political economy and macroeconomics; development, inequality and poverty; and business analytics, innovation and networks.

The Behavioural Finance Working Group brings together practitioners with internationally respected academics in finance, psychology, sociology and economics. It studies human behaviour in financial markets. As such, it is a truly interdisciplinary field at the cross section of finance, psychology, economics and sociology.

Finally, our academics work with colleagues from across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as part of the Centre on Labour and Global Production. This interdisciplinary research group studies the changing position of workers, labour and regulation in the world economy.
