Travel Bursary
Our Widening Participation Travel Bursary aims to bring students who have specific characteristics, typically under-represented in higher education, on to campus. The bursary aims to help students make informed choices about their future by exploring the options available to them.
The bursary is for students attending qualifying events taking place on our campuses and will provide support with travel costs (up to £40) to eligible participants.

Qualifying Events
The bursary is available for students attending the following events at Queen Mary:
- An Undergraduate Open day
- An Undergraduate Offer Holder Event
- An event as part of our access programmes; including Access to Queen Mary, Bridge the Gap, Queen Mary Futures, and Pathways to Law.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Widening Participation Travel Bursary, students' must meet all essential criteria, as well as at least one of the additional criteria listed below:
Essential criteria:
- Have ‘Home’ fee status and currently reside in the UK
- Be studying at a state-funded school or college
- Be registered for an Offer Holder Event, Open Day, or currently participating in one of our access programmes .
Additional criteria (at least one must apply)
- In receipt of Free School Meals within the last six years
- Care Leaver, Care Experienced, or Estranged
- Students with a disability
- Currently participating in one of our access programmes

How to apply
- Register for a qualifying event - Make sure you are signed up to attend one of the eligible events detailed above.
- Apply for the travel bursary - Once you have registered, apply for the bursary to confirm your eligibility.
- Keep proof of your travel costs - When attending the event, keep evidence of your travel expenses. This could include:
- Receipts
- Booking confirmations
- TfL Journey History which you can access this by linking your payment card to an Oyster account.
- Submit your claim - After attending the event, you will be sent a claim form to reimburse you, which should be completed within 14 days.
