Tools and Applications

ITS Research can give access to a number of research tools and applications both via HPC, directly and via remote access.

Apocrita provides a comprehensive software environment covering scientific, engineering, computational, statistical and data-analysis applications, with software made available through environment modules and container technologies. Researchers can also make use of GPU computing for applications that benefit from accelerated workloads, with CUDA and GPU-enabled versions of a number of scientific and analytical applications available on Apocrita.

For interactive work, OnDemand provides browser-based access to graphical applications and interactive development environments, allowing researchers to work with data and applications directly on the HPC system without requiring specialist local software or X-server configuration. This is particularly useful for interactive workflow development, data visualisation and applications such as RStudio.

Beyond providing access to high-performance computing, the team provide tools to support the development, execution and analysis of research workflows.

For researchers developing and managing their own software, GitHub provides a source code platform for hosting, version-controlling and collaborating on research software.

For data-intensive research, associated services such as Globus provide high-speed data transfer and secure sharing of research data between QMUL systems, collaborators and external research institutions.

Together, these services provide a flexible research-computing environment that supports researchers throughout the computational workflow—from developing and versioning code, through large-scale computation and interactive analysis, to data visualisation, data transfer and collaboration.
