Title: Enriching STEM Education: Research, co-creation, and authentic assessments

Published:

Abstract

The landscape of higher education in STEM is currently undergoing a phase of remarkable evolution, characterised by the continuous introduction and adoption of a wide array of innovative pedagogical methodologies within STEM-based educational programmes. These innovations are specifically tailored to enhance the educational experiences of students while accommodating a multiplicity of learning preferences. Additionally, they create valuable opportunities to exploit pedagogical creativity, cultivate reflective practices, and refine professional aptitude. This talk focuses on three pivotal constituents that have been strategically woven into curricular and extracurricular settings at SEMS; in particular, it will illustrate how investigative research, co-creation, and diversified assessments have been integrated to broaden the skill set of SEMS students. The versatile frameworks developed can be readily applied to broader STEM contexts, facilitating students' and educators' success and satisfaction.

Speakers: This presentation will be jointly delivered by Dr Giuseppe Viola and Dr Mouna Chetehouna, who collaboratively organised and delivered the modules that underpinned the research discussed here. Dr Giuseppe Viola is a newly appointed lecturer in materials science education at QMUS and the director of the Queen Mary Centre of Undergraduate Research. Dr Mouna Chetehouna is a Teaching Fellow at SEMS lecturing in the field of medical engineering, and a newly appointed leader in the academic integrity team.
