Compassionate Pedagogy

Understanding how compassionate pedagogy and a person centred approach can be adopted in teaching and learning

Dr. Mahesha Samaratunga's research focuses on understanding how compassionate pedagogy and a person centred approach (Carl Roger’s approach) can be adopted in teaching and learning.  Her research also looks at how a ‘therapeutic alliance’ between the lecturer and student can promote social belonging in the learning space.

Other areas of interest:

  • Mental health infused curriculum in computer science and engineering modules.
  • Different activities done within a pedagogy of compassion in the area of teaching, learning, assessment and relationship building within a module.
  • What does compassion look like in the hybrid teaching environment with large cohorts.
  • Creating human compassion led spaces in the classroom.
  • Creating a safe space in the classroom and cohort identity without compromising individual personalities.
