Year 4 - GP4
In GP4 students will hone their skills in managing complexity and uncertainty in medical practice in a world of health inequity. They will assess and manage people in primary care, with a focus on undifferentiated Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Elderly Care (including multimorbidity), Musculoskeletal Medicine, Sexual Health, Ophthalmology, and ENT. They will deepen their experience of working in a team while developing your professional identity.
For many years GP tutors have wanted to focus on generalism and general practice in a more consolidated block of teaching. Our students now spend 4 weeks in General Practice doing just this, but we ask our GP tutors to where possible align clinical experiences to the Specialties areas which are the foundation of the Year 4 curriculum (see 'Teaching' tab for details).
- Six blocks of 5 weeks GP teaching per year. (4 weeks in practice + 1 week central teaching).
- 3 days online Health Equity days led by medical school tutors.
- Learning outcomes will cover any clinical problem seen in primary care.
- There will be a focus on the main year 4 specialities and how relevant problems present and are managed in general practice
- These expectations will be reflected in student logbooks.
- Both student observed clinics (student observes GP) and supervised student-led clinics (with appropriate debrief)
- Attending specialist clinics aligned to Year 4 specialties (see "Teaching" tab), e.g. community antenatal, family planning, baby/child development, First Contact Physiotherapist, Care Home visits, frailty reviews, Psychology/Counselling sessions, smear clinics.
- Taking histories and examining patients with primary care presentations of Year 4 specialty areas.
- Sessions with practice nurse/midwife/health visitor
- Debrief on patient encounters and provided feedback to all students
*These will vary but could contain the above
GP tutors assess students on their attendance, professionalism, level of participation and engagement during the placement in a placement sign off. Students also are assessed on three written patient case reviews, an end of placement reflection and an FP10 exercise.
