One-Pot Molecular Diversity via the Harnessing of Multiple Reactive Intermediates

Research Group: Chemistry
Number of Students: 1
Length of Study in Years: 3 Years
Full-time Project: yes

Funding

This studentship is open to Mexican students applying for CONACyT funding. CONACyT will provide a contribution towards your tuition fees each year and Queen Mary will waive the remaining fee. CONACyT will pay a stipend towards living costs to its scholars.

Project Description

This project will deliver expedient synthesis of high-value organic molecules in a single complexity-generating reaction step. More specifically, the controlled interception of synthetic intermediates from transition metal catalysis with alternative reactive intermediates will provide selective access to structurally diverse heterocycle or polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds in a single reaction flask from cheap and simple bulk materials. This will enable rapid generation of substrate libraries around both the heterocycle and PAH motifs, core scaffolds in medicinal chemistry and organic materials respectively. Development of organic methodology and synthetic work will be conducted in the Jones group, with subsequent applications in the design and development of covalent organic frameworks in collaboration with Dr Szilagyi.

Requirements

Applications are invited from outstanding Mexican candidates with or expecting to receive a first or upper-second class master's degree in Chemistry or an area relevant to the project. A standalone master's degree, or undergraduate integrated master's degree are required for this position.

Applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Christopher Jones on c.jones@qmul.ac.uk prior to their submission by sending a CV and a description of their interests and expertise relevant to the project.
