Does the 'five-second rule' about dropping food really exist?

Published:

In a video for the BBC Dr Cutler from the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences tests the ‘five-second rule’ – the theory that it is safe to eat dropped food if it has been on the floor for less than five seconds. A variety of food is dropped on surfaces and then checked for contamination by different types of bacteria.

This story has been broadcast on BBC Radio4.
