Project title: The influence of hippocampal mechanisms on visual learning

Summary: Visual perceptual learning is the improvement in the ability to distinguish visual stimuli with experience, and it is thought to reflect plasticity in the visual cortex. In addition,  visual perceptual learning is strongly enhanced by sleep. Moreover, during sleep there is a synchronization of the neural activity in the visual cortex and the hippocampus, which has been suggested to result in the consolidation of memories, and thus, learning. This project aims to study the contribution of hippocampal activity to visual cortical plasticity and perceptual learning, by studying the influence of sleep on perceptual learning with visual psychophysical measurements in humans, and electrophysiological measurements in rodents.
