Dr Ron Cutler talks about how to avoid the ‘winter vomiting bug’, norovirus

The stomach bug Norovirus has temporarily forced hospital wards to close down and has affected up to 500,000 people. Dr Cutler gives advice on protection against the virus Commenting on hand gels, he said: “They are better than nothing and alcohol is a good cleaning agent. If you wash them all over your hand, in every crevice and crook, then they may help if soap and water is not available.” Drug companies are working on a vaccine and Professor Oxford said: “As there are different strains of norovirus, any vaccine will have to protect against several different types.”
