This module provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges of risk assessment, prediction and decision-making covering public health and medicine, the law, government strategy, transport safety and consumer protection. Students will learn how to see through much of the confusion spoken about risk in public discourse, and will be provided with methods and tools for improved risk assessment that can be directly applied for personal, group, and strategic decision-making. The module also directly addresses the limitations of big data and machine learning for solving decision and risk problems.
This module is only available to students enrolled on the MSc Digital and Technology Solutions Specialist degree apprenticeship.As defined in the approved Assessment Plan for the standard, a degree apprentice must pass this End Point Assessment in order to be eligible for the apprenticeship award. The End Point Assessment consists of 2 components: a project report and a Professional Discussion, both evaluated by an Independent Assessor.
This module will provide degree apprentices with the methodological skills to manage a big data project, both in terms of managing time/schedule and in terms of tools and technologies. It will encompass the whole data analysis pipeline, including obtaining and checking data, analysis, results evaluation, and feedback loop to evolve/improve the process. Degree apprentices will also gain practical experience in applying the taught methodology to data drawn from their own workplace context.
Degree apprentices will have the opportunity to apply the methodologies, approaches and technologies that they have learned during their taught modules to a significant advanced project embedded in their workplace context. The project topic will be appropriate to the degree apprenticeship specialism.
This module takes a practical approach to the coverage of ethics in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. It sees ethical considerations as part of a spectrum of concerns, including ethics, but extending through regulation and legal compliance as formal expressions of what is and is not ethical. It considers examples of the kinds of issues that arise in existing systems, and uses the UK Government's Ethical Framework as an example of how to embed considerations of ethics into business processes.
The aim of the module is to give students an understanding of machine learning methods, including pattern recognition, clustering and neural networks, and to allow them to apply such methods in a range of areas.
The Business Technology Strategy module is focused on strategic management of research and development and how technology strategy drives the commercial strategy of innovative technology-based organisations. This module complements the technical areas of the degrees by focusing on the Computer and Data Science sectors. The increased exposure to and understanding of the benefits of strategic knowledge and thinking will give the graduates a better preparation for management roles within this sector.
The module introduces core statistical concepts for practical data analysis. It will provide students with the skills to model data sources, analyze their statistical properties, visualize them in different ways and fit the samples to a known probabilistic model.
Cloud Computing has transformed how services and applications are delivered. Thanks to the rise of virtualisation technology and new programming paradigms, applications can quickly be delivered to a growing audience, without the need to physically own and configure the infrastructure. The Cloud Computing module will cover the main characteristics of Cloud Computing, including the enabling technologies, main software and service paradigms underpinning it, as well as related aspects, namely security, privacy, ethical concerns
This module focuses on the range of approaches, methodologies, techniques and tools for data analysis, and the use of data analysis findings to inform decision-making in an industrial / business context. It is a work-based module only available to students on relevant degree apprenticeship programmes.
Endpoint Assessment:
Apprentices work on developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the standard throughout the course. Progress is documented in meetings between the apprentice, their line manager and University Advisor. These tri-partite meetings take place 3-4 times a year, and can be supplemented whenever necessary by further informal meetings and/or emails between the apprentice and their student advisor.
After two semesters of their programme, students are required to submit 2 example KSB entries to the EPA coordinator who provides feedback on these, as well as providing further additional training on writing KSBs as well as more detail on the EPA process.
Towards the end of the second year of the programme, apprentices are required to submit a draft E-portfolio of the KSBs they have completed up to that point, and are again provided with feedback by the EPA coordinator, who will further help them (together with their University Advisor and the Programme Organiser where necessary) to complete their final KSBs. Each apprentice’s completed E-portfolio is checked by the EPA and the apprentice’s line manager before they receive authorisation to progress to the EPA gateway.
They cannot progress to the final EPA assessment until they have passed the taught L7 programme and have no resits outstanding.

The programme is delivered through 2 weeks of block teaching on Queen Mary campus during term-time, studying alongside degree apprentices from other employers and attending lectures, labs and tutorial sessions, practical and library-based research, presentations and group work.
For work-context modules, learning materials comparable to those for the equivalent campus-based module are provided, along with additional appropriate study guidance. Supplementary workshop-based or tailored individual support is provided through supervision by the module lecturer. You’ll be assigned an academic adviser/tutor, who is responsible for determining any additional individual/small group academic support needs, in conjunction with your employer.
Your project will be undertaken independently under the guidance of a project supervisor, who is an academic member of staff. They will advise on your progress, discuss research and design issues and plan your future work with you.
Contact hours
The programme comprises 6 sprint modules and 2 work-based modules, plus a capstone project. For each sprint module students receive 37.5 hours (5 days) is allocated for the sprint taught delivery plus 2.5 hours for each module revision workshop, so a total of 40 hours.
For each work-based module, there is a 1hr induction followed by 3 x 2hrs of labs which support the series of pre-recorded online lectures.
For the capstone project, apprentices receive 3 x 1.5hr support sessions from the Projects Coordinator, in addition to meeting with their Project Supervisor for a minimum of 0.5hr a week throughout the period of the project. Projects run from late January (after the exams) up to the middle of August in the second year of the Programme. Students also receive supervision from their line managers during this period.
The contact hours do not vary depending on the employer. All apprentices receive the same contact hours and support from Queen Mary.
Dr Requena-Carrion is Executive Vice Dean and Director of Queen Mary School Hainan. His main research interests include Machine Learning Project Management, Statistical Learning & Processing, Mathematical Modelling & Simulation, with applications to a diversity of areas including the healthcare sector.
Dr Stockman researches human-computer interaction, auditory displays and data sonification. His recent publications include a paper entitled “Augmented visuotactile feedback support sensorimotor synchronization skill for rehabilitation”, in partnership with F. Feng.
Dr Wang's research revolves around Signal Processing; Machine Learning; Robot Perception. He teaches on the Applied Statistics and Data Analytics (Work based) modules on the MSc Digital and Technology Solutions Specialist Apprenticeship Programme.
Queen Mary offers purpose-built and dedicated spaces for students on this programme, which include a high-quality, modern computing lab with fully networked multimedia workstations, which run both the Linux and Windows operating systems. Network ports are also provided for students choosing to use their own laptops for practical work. Students have access to a wide range of industry-standard software, including a variety of integrated software development environments, database management systems and web servers. A variety of specialised equipment and software is also available for course and project work.
Teaching is based at Queen Mary’s main Mile End campus, one of the largest self-contained residential campuses in the capital. Our location in the heart of London’s East End offers a rich cultural environment.
