This programme combines in-depth teaching of disease mechanisms and molecular technologies with an emphasis on developing your critical and practical skills. It will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills to pursue a research career, either in a clinical or scientific setting, and contribute to the growing need for scientists and clinicians to translate molecular advances into the clinical situation. We place a strong emphasis on development of your practical skills and this is reflected in the research skills module, and the three month laboratory-based project.
This is a Cancer Research UK (CRUK) backed course, taught in a CRUK approved lab and clinical environment.

The Barts Cancer Institute (BCI) is a Cancer Research-UK Centre of Excellence and a leading cancer research institute in the UK.

The Learning Resource centre has 200 networked PCs and is open to students round the clock, there are dedicated workstations for postgraduate students.
You will also have access to Queen Mary's comprehensive libraries, including the Postgraduate Reading Room, and The British Library can also be accessed as a research resource. You will also have access to medical libraries located at the Royal London and St Bart's hospitals and at the main College campus at Mile End.
You will be taught in a Cancer Research UK approved Centre of Excellence, with cutting edge facilities and technology. Resources include:
- Five fully equipped, state-of-the-art research laboratories that include suites for proteomics and mass spectroscopy, cancer pharmacology, FACS, molecular pathology services with automated immunohistchemistry/in situ hybridisation systems, intravital microscopy and confocal microscopy.
- Purpose built facilities including the Molecular Imaging Facility, and a dedicated Teaching Centre laboratory for BCI students.

MSc Molecular Pathology and Genomics is currently available for one year full-time study, or two years part-time study, as well as full-time and part-time distance learning options.
This programme is also available as a distance learning option. You will be able to follow each lecture online via audio recordings and slide/whiteboard content. All written assignments are submitted through the QMplus system and poster and oral presentations assessed through SKYPE/webcam system. You are encouraged to interact with teaching staff and other students in online discussion forums, join group activities and be part of the Institute's student community.
Undertaking a masters programme is a serious commitment, with weekly contact hours being in addition to numerous hours of independent learning and research needed to progress at the required level. When coursework or examination deadlines are approaching independent learning hours may need to increase significantly. Please contact the course convenor for precise information on the number of contact hours per week for this programme.
Part-time study options often mean that the number of modules taken is reduced per semester, with the full modules required to complete the programme spread over two academic years. Teaching is generally done during the day and part-time students should contact the course convenor to get an idea of when these teaching hours are likely to take place. Timetables are likely to be finalised in September but you may be able to gain an expectation of what will be required.

Entry to the programme requires a good degree (or degree-equivalent) qualification from a recognised academic institution or an appropriate professional qualification or experience.

Learning and teaching
As a student at Queen Mary, you will play an active part in your acquisition of skills and knowledge. Teaching is by a mixture of formal lectures and small group seminars. The seminars are designed to generate informed discussion around set topics, and may involve student presentations, group exercise and role-play as well as open discussion. We take pride in the close and friendly working relationship we have with our students. You are assigned an Academic Adviser who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary.
Leading academics at the forefront of clinical and laboratory research teach this course. The Course Director, Professor Louise Jones, heads up the new Breast Cancer Tissue Bank at Barts part of a ground-breaking initiative, and works closely with the Breast Unit at the Barts Cancer Centre.
For every hour spent in classes you will be expected to complete further hours of independent study. Your individual study time could be spent preparing for, or following up on formal study sessions; reading; producing written work; completing projects; and revising for examinations.
The direction of your individual study will be guided by the formal study sessions you attend, along with your reading lists and assignments. However, we expect you to demonstrate an active role in your own learning by reading widely and expanding your own knowledge, understanding and critical ability.
Independent study will foster in you the ability to identify your own learning needs and determine which areas you need to focus on to become proficient in your subject area. This is an important transferable skill and will help to prepare you for the transition to working life.
Assessment will be based on written assignments, posters and oral presentations, multiple choice (MCQ) and short-answer question (SAQ) examinations, and a full laboratory project write-up.
You will also be assessed on a 5,000-word laboratory project write up.
