What history can tell us about the Tory leadership race

Professor Philip Cowley published an opinion piece for The Times Red Box about Conservative leadership. He writes: “The assumption is that the Conservative grassroots are zealots, for whom ideological purity will be all. Maybe that will be true, and maybe right now Brexit will trump everything. But the one lesson from the two occasions where the membership has been consulted is that it can be more complicated than that.”
