An article from Reuters published in Indonesia’s Jakarta Post and the Chicago Tribune outlines the parallels between the conflict in Syria and Saddam Hussein’s Iraq after the first Gulf War. Dr Phillips comments that “if Syria’s middle-classes emigrate.. then an exhausted population ruled over by a state tightly controlling the supply of food and fuel could look very much like the Saddam model”.
