Global and Public Health programmes

We deliver world class research and education driving systemic change to improve population health

The Wolfson Institute of Population Health is a new institute within Queen Mary University of London's faculty of medicine and dentistry, which delivers internationally recognised research and teaching in population health.

The work of our researchers and educators has had a significant impact on lives across the world. We provide integrated teaching and training opportunities delivered by leaders in the field. By sharing knowledge and pushing the boundaries of research, we will continue to advance population health and preventive medicine on a global scale.

Our masters programmes will be of particular interest if you are a medical and clinical practitioner, a civil servant, a public health practitioner, a social or political scientist, a lab scientist, or work for a non-governmental organisation (NGO) or charity

We offer a range of flexible programmes to suit your specialist interests, career development plans, and life.

Our programmes

This multidisciplinary programme offers a wide-ranging analysis of the major issues affecting health and wellbeing, and examines how policy making can impact populations at local, national and international levels. Students can choose to specialise in areas like trade in health, global burden of disease, evidence-based policy making, pharmaceutical and clinical trials, anthropology of health, and ethics.

The programme is taught by our clinical and non-clinical academics, who are extremely active in research and the media around key global health challenges, including pandemics, such as Covid-19.

With students from a variety of different backgrounds and disciplines, debate and interaction forms a vital part of how the community learns.

With a research-led approach to study, this degree is aimed at students looking to develop their research skills. The MRes is particularly suited to students looking to move onto PhD study afterwards.

Alongside modules offered in conjunction with other Global and Public Health MSc programmes, students study compulsory modules in research design, and qualitative and quantitative methods taken jointly with social science students from a range of disciplines across Queen Mary, King’s College London and Imperial College London as part of the training offered by the ESRC funded London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership. This provides students with a strong foundation in research skills and interaction with a larger group of students from related disciplines.

This online programme offers you the flexibility to study part-time from anywhere in the world at certificate, diploma or masters level and start your studies in January, May or September. The programme focuses on social determinants of health, governance and climate change, will deepen your understanding of global health issues and help you become an astute health professional with a global perspective. Join an international student community with diverse backgrounds in this interactive online programme.

This MRes is the entry point for the PhD programme in Health Data in Practice, funded by Wellcome. You will become part of this prestigious interdisciplinary programme with access to leading researchers at the forefront of health data research. With access to real-world data and health settings, you will gain an in-practice context to health data science and research. As part of the programme, you will benefit from generous resources and support including access to innovative career development support during your PhD and a fund to support successful transition to the next stage in your career.

Wellcome is a politically and financially independent global charitable foundation that supports discovery research into life, health and wellbeing. It is taking on three worldwide health challenges: mental health, global heating and infectious diseases.

This programme is jointly taught by experts in global public health, and mental health from across Wolfson Institute of Population Health. This means that you benefit from specialist expertise across multiple disciplines and will be taught by practitioners and academics with substantial experience in their fields.

You will have the opportunity to consider mental health issues within the wider context of global public health and culture.

You will study five modules covering key elements of global public health and mental health, and also complete a 10,000 word dissertation.
