Francisca Soares (Regenerative Medicine MSc, 2021)

My name is Francisca Soares and I am a 2021 graduate from the Regenerative Medicine MSc. During my Bachelor studies, the topic of Regenerative Medicine as a novel approach to understanding and treating various diseases greatly attracted my interest. This programme was the best way to continue to gain knowledge in that area.

"Throughout the duration of the programme I was able to learn a lot about this fast-evolving field. The course focuses greatly on the topics of stem cells and tissue engineering and the lecturers do a great job at showing real-world applications of these techniques to better understand and treat diseases, which at least for me inspired me even more to pursue this field. The course also offers the subjects of research ethics and methodology, which I believe to be crucial to study for someone entering the research world. Although I, unfortunately, had to complete this course amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, the course leaders did a wonderful job at making the lectures interesting and up-to-date with the developments in the field. The opportunity to conduct my thesis research in the lab also provided me with important research skills that I am definitely carrying into my academic research career.

"I am now a first-year PhD student at University College Cork in Ireland, working on a novel approach for Crohn’s Disease therapy using nanoparticles encapsulating siRNA under a European-funded project. I believe the theoretical as well as practical research skills I acquired at Queen Mary University of London were key to my acceptance to this project.

"After I finish my PhD, I intend to continue my research career in academia or maybe even move to industry research, and continue to study diverse topics and discover more novel therapies for different diseases."

My name is Jishan Choudhury, a final-year MBBS student, and I am thrilled to share my experience regarding the MSc Regenerative Medicine programme at Queen Mary University of London's (QMUL) Blizard Institute.

Choosing to study at the Blizard Institute was an easy decision for me, having already been familiar with the excellent faculty of medicine at QMUL and my decision was also driven by the institute's stellar reputation as a leading research facility. Regenerative Medicine is the holy grail of medicine, coupled with my aspiration to elevate my laboratory skills, made the MSc at Blizard the ideal choice.

What truly set the programme apart for me was its engaging teaching modules, designed to cultivate a scientific mindset. The emphasis on critical thinking not only transformed me into a more analytical individual but also made the learning experience exceptionally enriching.
The pinnacle of the programme was the laboratory project – an intense yet incredibly rewarding endeavour. I undertook an exciting and challenging laboratory project, and it was a very proud moment for me to produce scientific work from my own research. Furthermore, being able to see your peers every day in the Blizard and share experiences about our different projects was a cherishing highlight.

Now in my final year of the MBBS programme at Barts Medical School, I can confidently say that the MSc in Regenerative Medicine has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional journey. It has enriched my critical thinking skills and significantly enhanced my efficiency in studying, positively impacting my performance in medical school.

Looking ahead, my aspirations are to become a clinical cardiovascular medicine specialist and engage in research in cardiac regeneration. The MSc programme at QMUL has not only equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge but has also inspired a trajectory toward a fulfilling and impactful career. I wholeheartedly recommend this programme to aspiring individuals seeking a holistic and enriching education in a dynamic and research-driven environment.
