In the augural Knowledge Exchange Framework published by Research England, Queen Mary was placed in the top 10 per cent of all English universities for ‘research partnerships’ and ‘public and community engagement’, in the top 20 per cent for ‘IP and commercialisation’, and in the top 30 per cent for ‘working with business’ and the ‘working with the public and third sectors’.

This ambition was validated in 2021, when Queen Mary was declared the most inclusive Russell Group university.
The Faculty of Science and Engineering is committed to excellence in research and innovation, and to delivering an exceptional education and student experience across all of our disciplines.
The Faculty’s research profile is on a rapid upward trajectory. Our research income has more than doubled over the last two years continues and our performance in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) was excellent. Our research is recognised all over the world with 97 per cent of science and engineering research output rated as internationally excellent with strong performances in all units of assessment, including Engineering (ranked 2nd in the UK for outputs and 7th overall) and Computer Science and Informatics (ranked 1st in the UK for impact and 8th overall).

Within the Faculty we have over 60 independent fellowship holders funded by UKRI, ERC, Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering and Leverhulme Trust and many large collaborative grants.
The Faculty invests significant funding in research facilities, equipment and PhD students supporting our research staff. We have a thriving population of over 900 PhD students including various Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) and EU Innovative Training Networks. The Faculty has five academic Schools offering comprehensive and diverse taught programmes. Our schools host and support over 13,500 students, approximately 400 academic staff, and 1,000 research, technical, professional services, and other support staff.
