In the UK’s 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), Queen Mary was ranked 5th among multi-faculty institutions for the proportion of world-leading and internationally excellent research outputs, and 9th on overall GPA.
In the augural Knowledge Exchange Framework published by Research England, Queen Mary was placed in the top 10 per cent of all English universities for ‘research partnerships’ and ‘public and community engagement’, in the top 20 per cent for ‘IP and commercialisation’, and in the top 30 per cent for ‘working with business’ and the ‘working with the public and third sectors’.

Faculty of Science and Engineering
The Faculty of Science and Engineering is committed to excellence in research and innovation, and to delivering an exceptional education and student experience across all of our disciplines.
We are ambitious, collaborative, and welcoming, and we are proud of our achievements. The Faculty’s research profile continues to be strengthened and we are focusing on establishing Queen Mary as one of the leading institutions for science and engineering in the UK. Our research is recognised all over the world and in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), 90 per cent of science and engineering research output was rated as internationally excellent or world-leading.
Our supportive and stimulating research environment attracts talent from across the world. Since 2013/14 the University has invested £185m in capital infrastructure across the University. This includes major investment in research infrastructure in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, including:

- a £33m refurbishment of our Engineering building (including new and refurbished laboratories)
- a £17.9m refurbishment of the Mathematical Sciences building
- a £3m refurbishment of research facilities in Physics and Astronomy
- £11.6m for refurbishment and new facilities in Biological Sciences, Psychology and Chemistry (including £5.2m for refurbishment of Chemistry laboratories)
- £1.5m invested in Empire House to support Computer Science
- a £2.8m investment in IT Laboratories on our Mile End campus in the last 18 months to provide enhanced research and teaching spaces.
Investing in research staff
At the core of Queen Mary’s research strategy is the fundamental contribution that world-leading and high-quality research staff make to the University’s success. The University strategy is to recruit the highest-calibre researchers, support their career development at all stages and provide an environment in which they can thrive and flourish.
Within the Faculty we have over 60 independent fellowship holders funded by UKRI, ERC, Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering and Leverhulme Trust. Our annual research income is in excess of £40m.
The Faculty leads the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Artificial Intelligence and Music (AIM), the EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) Mobility Pilot in data science and engineering with industry partners, and the BBSRC Collaborative Training Partnership in Artificial Intelligence in Drug Discovery with Exscentia, Merck and Heptares.

The Faculty is part of a number of DTPs, including the BBSRC London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium, EPSRC CDTs in Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence and in Plastics Electronics, and the London NERC DTP, as well as a number of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks.
The Faculty has five academic Schools offering comprehensive and diverse taught programmes. Our schools host and support over 13,500 students, approximately 400 academic staff, and 1,000 research, technical, professional services, and other support staff.
We are currently looking to build on our success and further enhance our expertise in our strategic research priority areas of Digital Environment, Bioscience and MedTech and/or Green Energy and Sustainability, with an investment of up to 25 new permanent Lectureships to be spread across our five Schools.
