The London Financial Regulation Seminar is an inter-collegiate and inter-disciplinary group of experts led by CCLS and our Institute of Banking and Finance under the leadership of Professor Rosa M. Lastra and Dr. Daniele D’Alvia.

On Monday 27 March 2023, Dr Despina Chatzimanoli, LLM , Senior Legal Expert at the European Banking Authority (EBA) will be talking about “The work of the European Banking Authority: single market and banking union”. Professor Lastra will chair the event.

Despina Chatzimanoli is a Senior Legal Expert and Team Leader of Regulatory Policy Advice Team 2 in the Legal and Compliance Unit of the European Banking Authority. She holds an LL.M. from University College London, and a Ph.D. focused on European Banking Law from the European University Institute (EUI). After working for the (then) UK Financial Services Authority as coordinator of the FSA’s participation in the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision, she joined CEBS (the Committee of European Banking Supervisors) which in 2011 was transformed into the EBA. Since then, she has been advising on a diverse number of topics in almost all of the EBA’s regulatory areas (prudential rules, infrastructures, securitisation, supervisory reporting etc) as well as, more recently, in relation to anti-money laundering and digital finance).

Despina will enlighten us on the role of the European Banking Authority and the other ESAs. She will explain the regulatory process of the EBA in the context of the EU legislative making and its tasks, objectives and challenges. She will also consider the interaction between the EBA and the Banking Union (ECB/SSM) and briefly consider the implications that Brexit has had on the EBA’s work and how it affects banking regulation more generally.
