Research project: Since the end of World War II, the United States military has stationed large numbers of soldiers abroad, in peacetimes as well as in war. My research investigates the ways the US military attempts to make personnel feel “at home” abroad and the very specific idea of America-as-home that it cultivates to do so. These practices may help to ease the difficulties of deployment for some, but at the same time they are a meaningful aspect of American imperialism.
