Why did you choose to study your programme at Queen Mary and why Queen Mary?

Queen Mary stood out to me because of its strong Computer Science curriculum, which balances theory with hands-on projects. I was particularly drawn to modules like Algorithms & Data Structures and Web Programming, where the lecturers explained complex concepts in a clear and engaging way. The university’s diverse community and strong industry connections also made it an ideal place to develop both academically and professionally.

What is your favourite thing about Queen Mary?

The collaborative and welcoming environment. Whether through hackathons, student societies, or group projects, there are always opportunities to learn and connect with others. The supportive academic culture, combined with the range of extracurricular activities, makes it a great place to grow both technically and personally.

Which modules did you most enjoy, and were there any academics that had a strong influence on shaping your time and studies here?

I’ve particularly enjoyed Algorithms & Data Structures, Procedural Programming, and Database Systems. These modules strengthened my problem-solving skills and helped me approach software development more efficiently. The lecturers made complex topics accessible and engaging, which had a significant impact on my learning.

Are you a member of any societies or attend any industry events during your time at Queen Mary? If so, which and what did you gain from them?

I was part of the Google Developer Student Clubs (GDSC), where I helped organise events and mentor students. I also attended industry networking events and hackathons, such as the Microsoft Hackathon, where my team built an AI-powered electronic patient record system. These experiences helped me develop leadership skills and expand my professional network.

What kind of careers/employability support do you get during your studies?

Queen Mary provides strong employability support, including career mentoring, CV reviews, and mock interviews. The university also hosts industry-led sessions and technical workshops that help students prepare for job applications. Programmes like MySkills ensure students build a strong portfolio, making them stand out.

What do you hope to do after graduation?

I want to work in software engineering, focusing on building scalable, high-performance systems. I enjoy solving complex problems and optimising processes, so I see myself working in areas like fintech or cybersecurity. Long term, I’m also interested in leading technical teams or pursuing research in AI-driven optimisation.

What's one piece of advice you'd offer to someone considering studying Computer Science at Queen Mary?

Stay engaged and take advantage of everything Queen Mary offers. The course is challenging but well-structured, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. Get involved in hackathons, industry events, and side projects to apply what you learn and make the most of your time here.
