Profile

Dr. Tatek Abebe is a professor and convenor of postgraduate programs in childhood studies at the Norwegian University of Sciences and Technology, NTNU. A social geographer by training, his research examines how children and young people are affected by and contribute to the socio-cultural and political-economic environments they inhabit. Abebe has conducted ethnographic research on precarious childhoods and youth in diverse African contexts, with an emphasis on labor, care, education, livelihoods and rights as well as their connections to processes of social reproduction. He is keen on using arts-based participatory research methodologies that privilege the perspectives of children and young people in ways that are not only ethical and empowering to them but also relevant for policy and advocacy.
