Arts & Culture

Welcome to Arts & Culture

Since its inception as a ‘People’s Palace’, established in 1887 to provide ‘rational and instructive entertainment’ to the people of East London, Queen Mary has a long commitment to arts and culture.

We use arts-based methodologies to solve real-world problems in truly interdisciplinary ways. World-leading innovations in research, teaching and collaboration at Queen Mary draw on arts and culture expertise and methodologies across science, medicine and the humanities.

Alongside our programmes of study in Drama, English, Film, Languages and Music, Business and Management students have manifold opportunities to engage with the arts, through our music programme, our internships and consultancy training, our Students Union, and our five affiliate arts organisations, based on campus and in the East End – Wasafiri, Project Phakama, People’s Palace Projects, Spitalfields Music and Contemporary Music for All (CoMA).

Arts and Cultural Sector Advocacy and Support

We sustain long term partnerships and collaborations across East London, nationally and internationally, benefitting from the mutual exchange of knowledge and expertise with arts and cultural organisations and workers.  We offer support and resources to individual artists and arts, heritage and creative organisations, and we retain a commitment to making our campus a genuinely public space useful to local and international practitioners alike.
