The School of SPCS warmly invites you to an Inaugural Lecture from their Head of School, Professor Peter Hobson, taking place in a Mixed Mode capacity on Tuesday, 7 December from 16:00.

In experimental science, there is the continuous development of the techniques and apparatus used by practitioners. In many cases these advances result in a technique, or a material, becoming obsolete. In this inaugural lecture, Professor Hobson, an experimental particle physicist, will discuss some techniques and materials in his field of research that within his professional lifetime became obsolete but have been revived. He will illustrate his talk with examples from his own research projects and reflect on whether experimental techniques or materials, can be said to become obsolete or whether “dormant” might be a better term.
