Sergii Vernygorodskyi is a professor and pathologist specializing in gastrointestinal pathology. His principal scientific contribution has been the study of gastric mucosal metaplasia and precancerous transformation, using histopathology, immunohistochemistry and molecular markers to better understand gastric carcinogenesis and improve diagnosis and prognosis. His research has evolved toward contemporary questions of gastric epithelial plasticity and the molecular mechanisms driving metaplastic change.
