Advice Surgeries

The Centre for Civic and Public Engagement runs monthly Advice Surgeries, where you can get one-to-one support and advice on public, community and civic engagement. Each surgery slot lasts for 30 minutes and takes place online.

We are happy to discuss and advise on:

• public engagement ideas and how to get started
• defining and reaching public audiences
• project development
• logistics and delivery
• budgets and costing
• external funding opportunities (including reviewing draft funding applications*)
• evaluation
• partnerships
• patient and public involvement (advice provided by our colleagues in the Research Engagement team)

*If you would like advice on an external funding application, please ensure you send an email to engagement@qmul.ac.uk with a link to further information about the funding opportunity you are applying for, along with a draft of your application/any background information, with at least one week's notice - so that this can be reviewed ahead of the advice surgery.

Unfortunately, in these sessions we are not able to offer advice on the following:

• participatory research
• internal CPE funding grants

For advice on the Engagement Fund (the CPE's internal funding programme), please find out more about the Drop-In Advice sessions taking place specifically for the fund in October 2026-January 2027.

How to book

You can book your Advice Surgery online using Microsoft Bookings. Please specify the reason for attending the surgery so we can best assist you.

Pease note that you will need to be a QMUL user (i.e. logged in with your QMUL email address, rather than an NHS email address) to book an Advice Surgery.

If you are no longer able to attend your advice surgery slot, please ensure that you cancel your booking via Microsoft Bookings so that the slot can be reallocated.
