Find out more about what civic engagement is and why it matters
Civic engagement is how a university works in partnership with its local communities and strategic external partners to create positive social, economic and cultural change in the place it is situated. It involves using and sharing the university’s knowledge, research, education and resources to address local challenges, build stronger communities, support economic growth, and help create thriving, inclusive places.
At Queen Mary, civic engagement is rooted in our commitment to East London and the seven East London boroughs. It is shaped by collaboration and partnership with local communities, public bodies, local authorities, elected leaders, health systems, education providers, businesses, SME’s, charities and faith and community organisations.
Through our Civic University Agreement, launched in 2022, Queen Mary has set out a shared vision and series of commitments to deepen its impact across the region. By listening to community priorities and working alongside external partners, staff and students, we aim to embed civic engagement across the University, ensuring that our education, research and other strategic activities contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing, prosperity and opportunities of the communities we serve.
