Biotechnology MSc

Part of: Biological and Biomedical Sciences and Engineering

Entry year: 2027/28

Could biology help create a more sustainable future? Explore how biotechnology can develop new medicines, materials and biofuels.

Approach biotechnology like an engineer, exploring synthetic biology, genome editing, bioinformatics and industrial biotechnology. Get hands-on with DNA assembly and CRISPR-Cas9, and discover how biological systems can be engineered to create new products and processes.

Explore how research can become commercial opportunities and prepare for a career in biotechnology, start-ups or further research.

  • Complete a six-month Biotechnology Research Project, working with academics across areas including structural biology and evolutionary genetics.

  • Learn how to engineer synthetic cells and cell-free systems for use in biotechnology and synthetic biology.

  • Explore responsible commercialisation, from intellectual property and patents to getting investment, including a Dragon’s Den-style pitch.

  • Access specialist technologies including fluorescence microscopy, mass spectrometry, cell-free systems and automation.

What you'll study

In the first semester, students will study four compulsory modules, covering Principles of Synthetic Biology, Industrial Biotechnology, Unix and Analysis of Large Genomic Datasets and Responsible Innovation and Commercialisation. In semester two, students will take two compulsory modules covering Genome Editing in Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology, and Proteins and Biocatalysts in Biotechnology. Students will also undertake a Biotechnology Research Project, which will be supervised by academics who specialise in a wide range of disciplines, including structural biology and evolutionary genetics.
