What you'll study
This programme considers both the arts and science perspectives. Study the history, theory and practice of performance in relation to all aspects of mental health promotion and the prevention and treatment of mental illness.
You will be encouraged to consider how the creative arts can be used to think critically about concepts and experiences of mental health and the mental health system. You will consider ways of engaging the public with these concerns. You will undertake a critical analysis of the scientific method(s) of mental health research and practice and explore the use of arts-based research, evaluation and dissemination methods.
The course is not clinical, therefore you will not leave with a clinical accreditation in mental health practice or art therapy. Rather, the course is based on practice, research and critical thinking. You will be encouraged to develop your own specialist interest in relation to the arts and mental health, whether you come from an arts or a science background.
We aim to develop genuine best practices for better, more effective collaborations among arts practitioners, healthcare practitioners and patients, so we can best serve the interests of all within mental health and social care systems.
Additional costs
You may have to pay for entrance charges and travel for performances, exhibitions and field visits, although such costs will be kept to a minimum. Set books are usually available through the library, but you may wish to buy your own copy in some instances.
Structure
- Three compulsory modules
- One elective module (from a choice of four)

Programme changes for 2020
At Queen Mary, we have been adapting to the challenges of Covid-19 so we are ready for the new academic year, with all the academic, pastoral and community support you need to settle in and thrive. For your chosen programme of study, the result is an innovative blended learning offering, giving you access to a world-class education whether or not you can join us on campus from September. For more information, please visit our dedicated FAQ pages.
Please note that the modules listed below are for students starting the programme in September 2020.
Compulsory/Core modules
Performing Mental Health
"This module explores the performance of mental health and mental illness as they have been defined across history, and in the contemporary moment. In particular the module asks how the social construction of mental health is reflected in and produced by performance. While the module focuses on the types of subjectivity and selfhood that have emerged in the history of theatre and performance, students are also encouraged to explore ways other creative practices engage these topics. Special attention is given to representations of 'madness' and `mental illness' produced in historical performance, as well as to how these representations have since been reinterpreted and adapted to reflect current constructions and concerns. In addition we will consider a variety of contemporary and collaborative performance practices that interrogate attitudes relating to normative concepts of mental health, and even try to intervene into policy and care. Students will be introduced to broad debates on mental health from within the Humanities and informed by the approaches of disability studies. "
Research Methods
MSc students will learn some of the methodological challenges in conducting research relevant to the students chosen pathway (Transcultural Mental Healthcare or Psychological Therapies). They will also carry out a sustained inquiry and extended piece of high quality research work relevant to their professional context or personal interest. Students will be encouraged to publish and disseminate their research work. Module 3 Research Methods is compulsory to all MSc students and includes research methods and evidence based practice. Students aiming for the MSc award are required to undertake a dissertation on an original topic that includes original research and comprehensive literature review using systematic methods. Completion of Modules 1, 2 and 3 is accredited for exit with an MSc in either Psychological Therapies of Transcultural Mental Healthcare.
Critical Mental Health Sciences
"This module sets out the existing state of mental health care and practice, taking account of the historical legacy and the place of power and identity in contemporary practice. Students will learn about assessment and diagnostic practices, their strengths and limitations, and about traditions of research, evaluation and engagement/dissemination methods ranging from medical to social sciences. The module is based on seminal readings and textbooks that investigate the philosophy, social and anthropological perspectives on mental health practice, and the place of representation and stigma in modern policy and practice. The module also addresses historical and contemporary debates within the field of mental health and mental health care.
Critical Encounters in Arts and Mental Health
This module examines the work of existing and historical leaders and influential practitioners and researchers in the field of mental health. This module will investigate their approach to mental health care and research. Examples of these figures might be Freud, Jung, Laing, Lacan, Pinel and Basaglia; contemporary pioneers will also be discussed and their work and legacy laid open for its implications for safe and humane mental health care. The implications of the works by these pioneers as well as key pioneers in arts-practice on arts and mental health will be critically examined. The module will explore the links between the work of these leaders and practitioners and contemporary approaches that inform our understanding of arts and mental health, including the work of arts companies. This module is distinct in using and proposing integration of evaluation methods and processes from the arts and humanities and social, anthropological and medical sciences. As per Module 1, this module will be research-driven and provide critical reviews and methodological reflections. The taught component of this module will consist in 1 hours lecture and 2 hours workshop and group work for 12 weeks.
Elective modules
Independent Written Project
"This module provides students with the opportunity to design and produce an independent written project under the supervision of a member of staff. This module enables students to work independently on topics not provided within existing modules, subject to the availability of a suitable supervisor. Entry on to the module is at the discretion of the module convenor and prospective students are required to submit a 300-word abstract outlining their proposed topic by Week 10 of Semester 1. Student should consult with a member of staff (ideally their proposed supervisor) in the module of preparing their abstract. Students will be notified by Week 12 of Semester 1 whether they have been accepted on to the module. This module may only be taken by students enrolled on the MA Theatre and Performance."
Theatre for Young People: Pedagogy in Practice
This module offers a group placement within a young people's theatre company or other relevant arts organisation working with young people. The organisations offering the group placement will normally be working with young people in mental health contexts, or with young people who have experiences of social and mental health issues. It offers the opportunity to observe, learn and develop arts-based teaching methodologies with and for young people and to explore the social, mental and creative benefits of the arts for young people.
Assessment
- 67% Modules
- 33% Dissertation
Dissertation
You will write a 10,000-15,000-word final dissertation, using an art-based or science-based methodology or an original and comprehensive systematic literature review.
Where applicable, you will be required to obtain ethics applications for your research.
You will be matched with at least one dissertation supervisor from either Drama or Psychiatry, based on your topic and methods of research, who will offer you individual tutorials.
Teaching
You will learn through a mixture of specialist lectures delivered by academics, clinicians and artists, seminars and group work, practice-based workshops and field visits. Research skills are taught in dedicated seminars.
As part of your chosen elective you may undertake a work placement within an organisation that operates in a field related to creative arts and mental health. Alternatively, you can develop your own arts practice through a dedicated module.
