About the DoingIPS Research Node at SPIR
DoingIPS is a transnational research network bringing together scholars working in the broad area of International Political Sociology (IPS). IPS scholarship engages contemporary challenges to instituted relations between the social, political and international. It is methodologically varied and theoretically transdisciplinary. The School of Politics and IR at Queen Mary is home to one of the DoingIPS research nodes which has been organising seminars series, workshops, roundtables and other public events.
Past events
IPS Winter School at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro
From July 4th, 2022 to July 15th, 2022, 25 masters, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers took part in the 7th edition of the annual IPS Winter School at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. The Winter School was co-organised with SPIR and DoingIPS through a British Academy Writing Workshop Grant (WW20200143). Participants had the chance of discussing the latest theories, methods, and research in IPS with over 10 guest-faculty members from across the world – including QM’s Jef Huysmans and Engin Isin. IPS at EISA - 15th Pan-European Conference on International Relations
Last September, in a sweltering Athens and after two years of online conferencing, it was great to see that International Political Sociology remains a diverse and real intellectual force in the European International Studies Association. At the 15th Pan-European Conference on International Relations (1-4 September 2022), the Standing Section Doing International Political Sociology, co-chaired by Jef Huysmans (Queen Mary) and Joao P. Nogueira (PUC-Rio) organised 16 panels and roundtables, representing the richness and variety of research done in International Political Sociology. SPIR was well represented in the Doing IPS section with presentations from Ida Roland Birkvad, Jaakko Heiskanen, Alvina Hoffmann, Jef Huysmans, Nivi Manchanda, Mirko Palestrino, Janina Pescinski, and Alexander Stoffel. DoingIPS PhD Seminar Series London
On September 30th, 2022, the fifth edition of the DoingIPS London PhD Seminar Series was launched at Queen Mary University of London. Jointly organised by PhD researchers and the DoingIPS convenors, the seminar series brings together UK-based PhD students from a variety of institutions and disciplinary traditions to present their work, invite external discussants, and gather focussed feedback. Participants meet once a month in one of the three host institutions – KCL, LSE and QMUL – for a total of ten, 2-hours-long seminars throughout the academic year. The series was opened by a collective discussion on ‘new avenues in current IPS research’. Over 20 scholars joined the launch. SPIR’s PhD coordinators Hannah Owens and Mirko Palestrino have handed over to Meena Masood and Timor Landherr. Recent seminars were held on October 28th at LSE and December 9th at QMUL. Upcoming seminars are scheduled to take place on January 27th, February 24th, and March 31st.

LINES: Making Friends; Crossing Borders Exhibition Launch – 31 January 2023
Over the course of a four-year research, Dr Holly Eva Ryan has been examining how the practice of twinning has featured in wider struggles to challenge and change the course of global politics. LINES: making friends; crossing borders presents the findings of this research in visual form. A unique collaboration between Dr Ryan and Minute Works Studios, the exhibition features eight monochrome posters as well as a visual fieldwork diary from the project. The exhibitions will be launched on Tuesday, 31st January 2023, 17:00 – 19:00 at The Bloc, Arts One Building. Register here.
DoingIPS Symposium – 14 April 2023
The DoingIPS research node at SPIR is currently co-organising with members of DoingIPS Brazil a one-day IPS-themed symposium on the theme of Timespaces. The event will be formally announced shortly and will bring together IPS academics to discuss IPS, time & temporality, and placemaking in different formats, as well as launch a mentoring scheme pairing up UK- and Brazil-based IPS researchers.
IPS Winter School 8th Edition – 3-14 July 2023
The IPS Winter School is an annual event held over two weeks for the benefit of postgraduate students and researchers. Its objective is to debate critical themes and approaches proposed by international political sociology. The 8th Edition of the IPS Winter School will take place between the 3rd and 14th of July 2023 at PUC-Rio’s campus in Rio de Janeiro. More information available here.
