The programme seeks to advance understanding of electoral integrity, strengthen African democratic institutions and foster informed public discourse on African elections through evidence-based research, policy engagement and public outreach initiatives.

Established in 2024, AES examines critical dimensions of electoral processes across the African continent through combining rigorous academic inquiry with practical insights drawn from fieldwork. Its work encompasses on-the-ground observations of voting and results declaration and in-depth analysis of Electoral Integrity Peer Review Mechanisms (EIPRMs) within African regional organisations.

Key areas

  • On-the-ground election observation, with particular attention to the final week of operations by national election commissions and the results transmission process.
  • The nature, workings and politics of Electoral Integrity Peer Review Mechanisms (EIPRMs) within African regional organisations.
  • Comparative analysis of election management procedures across the African continent.
  • Providing evidence to strengthen African democratic institutions and enhancing the quality of public discourse on electoral processes.
  • Developing the next generation of African electoral experts through targeted training, PhD studentships and fellowship programmes.
