‘I’ve lost confidence in them but I don’t know if I can switch’: Tories in West Midlands face voting dilemma

Published:

Tim Bale, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary University of London and an authority on Conservative party politics, believes Truss’s best option is to drop the bankers’ bonuses, reinstate the rise in corporation tax and cancel the lowering of the top rate of income tax. “Then,” he says, “they might get away with it.”

But it will be a major admission of defeat by Truss, who was warned, not least by her rival Sunak, that tax cuts wouldn’t work. “Yes,” says Bale, “but a U-turn is survivable. Driving the car off the cliff isn’t.”

Professor Bale was also quoted in the Independent on the possibility of Liz Truss being replaced as Prime Minister, Wall Street Journal and New Statesman articles on the country’s recent economic policies (clippings available on request), and additional pieces on the Prime Minister in the New York Times and Bloomberg.
