Swing states could shape the US election because of the way the electoral college system works. Both parties in the US elections have a chance of victory in swing states. They therefore channel their efforts into getting voters in these states on their side. Dr Richard Johnson, a lecturer at Queen Mary has stated "campaigning in some states matters more than others".
