Boris Johnson in intensive care - what next?

Published:

Professor Tim Bale, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary University of London was interviewed on the BBC's World Service following the announcement that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in hospital. Professor Bale said: "It is not unprecedented, Prime Ministers are human beings, they do get ill. The man Boris Johnson models himself on, Winston Churchill, was very ill in the 1950s and ministers simply deputised for him in those cases [...] It is the responsibility of the Prime Minister to look across government and coordinate departments. The worrying thing is there will be nobody to do that unless someone can step into his shoes [...] Dominic Raab will have to relinquish some of his responsibilities as Home Secretary to do this."
