The term 'refugee' was first applied to the Huguenots as they started to establish themselves in east London from the 16th Century onwards - Dr Anne Kershen tells the story of their arrival in the city in a feature for Church Times. She writes: “The Huguenots were the earliest incomers to make their own religious imprint on the area, and they established a pattern for later migrants.”
