3 December 2015

Time: 4:15 - 6:00pm
Venue: Mile End Campus, Francis Bancroft Building, Room 3.17

Hegemony and Radical Democracy (Thursday 3 December 2015)
Reading: Preface to the Second Edition (vii-xix), Introduction (1-7), Chapter 4 (149-194)

It seems pertinent to (re-)read Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: Towards a Radical Democratic Politics in 2015. Not only is this year the 30th anniversary for the publication of the book, but the book and its theory of hegemony have been the inspiration for left-wing populist movements so successful in Southern Europe this year. It is also a notoriously dense and difficult text to read.

The reading group will meet four times in the autumn of 2015, each time to discuss one of the four chapters of the book. The meetings will take place on Thursdays from 4.15 pm to 6 pm. Each time, the discussion will be opened by a volunteer member of the group. Please bring the text to the meetings.

Reading: Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: Towards a Radical Democratic Politics, 2nd ed. (London: Verso, 2001).
