Journey to Higher Education

Queen Mary is pleased to provide a series of webinars and student panels to support you with your journey to higher education  

We are excited to bring back our series of webinars for Autumn/Winter 2022, designed to help you navigate your journey to higher education

Our online series of webinars and student panel events aims to support you through the different stages of the application process 

Each session will provide you with information and practical tips to guide you through your journey to higher education. You will get the chance to hear from current Queen Mary students who have been through it all before.

Parents and Carers you will notice specific sessions to help you support your young person throughout their journey to higher education but please feel free to also register for sessions aimed at students.

Preparing for university interviews - Medicine spotlight

Monday 5 December 2022, 5.00 - 6.00pm (GMT)

This session will provide an overview of what students can expect when they participate in university medicine interviews and how best to prepare for them.

This session will cover:

• What interviewers are looking for
• Answering questions
• Question topics, overview and Q&A on answering questions

This session will provide an overview of what students can expect when they participate in university dentistry interviews and how best to prepare for them.

Wednesday 7 December 2022, 4.30 - 5.30pm (GMT)

London remains the best city in the world to be a university student, according to the QS World Student Cities 2022 surveys and analysis. Join Queen Mary students as they discuss what life as a student in London is really like. They will discuss:

  • Why they chose to study in London 
  • London and QMUL social life 
  • London Costs and if its really as bad as we are told 
  • What moving to a big city is really like
  • Why some chose to commute to university

Understanding Support Service: Advice for Care Experienced Students

Tuesday 31 January 2022, 4.30 - 5.30pm (GMT)

This session is specifically for care-experienced students and supporters. We will be discussing the different types of support available to you at university as a care experienced student. 

 We will cover:

  • How you can let universities know that you are care-experienced

  • Applying for student finance

  • The types of support available to you at university

  • Useful resources to help you prepare for university

We will be joined by a member of the welfare advice team to share their advice and answer your questions. 

This webinar is aimed at year 12 and 13 students.

Understanding Student Finance and Budgeting

Wednesday 1 February 2022, 4.30 - 5.30pm (GMT)

This session will provide an overview of student finance for September 2023 entry as well as ways on how to budget and manage your finances whilst at university.

This session will cover:

  • Student Finance England
  • Different types of loans
  • What you could be entitled to
  • How to apply
  • Understanding repayments
  • Tips on how to budget 

We will also be joined by current Queen Mary students who will share how the budget and answer any of your questions about student finance.

Join us in this online talk which will explore Degree Apprenticeships including what they are and how to apply

This session will be a chance for to to hear from Queen Mary alumni who studied a range of Humanities and Social Science subjects over the years.

  • Where a Humanities and Social Science degree can get you 
  • How a Humanities or Social Science degree helped them get to where they are now
  • Looking back on their studies at Queen Mary
  • Share tips and advice on how to make the most of your time at university
  • Insight into the world of work and their industries

Parents and Carers - Understanding Student Finance 

Wednesday 22 March 2022, 6.00 - 7.00pm (GMT)

Join us in this webinar as we provide you with an overview of Student Finance for students and how you can support your young person during their Student Finance application. 

We will cover

  • Student Finance England
  • Different types of loans
  • Understanding what your young person could be entitled to
  • How they apply and how you can support their application 
  • Understanding what information you will need to supply 
  • Repayments after graduation 

This session is at parents and carers who are supporting young people in year 12 or 13. 

Please note figures discussed in the webinar will be specific to September 2023 entry but much of the information will be valuable to parents and parents of younger students.

University Study Skills 

Wednesday 5 April 2022, 4.30 - 5.30pm (BST)

This webinar will help you to understand the differences between learning at school and university and consider the essential skills required to be successful in higher education

; from note taking to finding appropriate academic sources. 

We will cover

  • How learning at University is different to school/college 
  • Note taking 
  • Finding academic sources 
  • Time keeping and organisation 
  • What you can do now to prepare yourself for university study 
  • Academic support available at university 

We will joined by current Queen Mary students who will share their experiences of academic study and share tips and advice and answer any of your questions.
